1-Submitted IOC attendance/training reports to the Director (Dr. Ahmad Khan and now Dr. Rahanna Juman 2-Able to have the director steer the IMA Research from continued monitoring of coastal biodiversity to more of ocean-based scientific research – please see following e-mail below Dear Colleagues, The decade 2021-2030 is designated to be the “Decade of the Oceans†by the United Nations Environment Programme and the IMA intends to be participating in as many of the activities, workshops, conferences and meetings it can, either physically or via digital means. Preparations at the international level are well underway to develop a series of activities to mark the start of the decade and the email and links below just give a small snippet of what’s on the agenda. What’s also notable in the links provided is the type of research that is now being done globally in the sphere of Ocean Science and in the next two years, the IMA will be doing its utmost best to restart our oceanographic research programmes and to catch up with what is “Fresh, Hip and in the Now†with ocean science research. Central to that will be our public education , awareness, information dissemination and outreach initiatives which will lead to building Citizen Science capacity here in Trinidad and Tobago. Have a read…feedback on how we can mark the occasion here in T&T at midnight on December 31st 2020 will be welcome….after all we are the Institute of Marine Affairs and we are expected to take the lead role in all matters related to the marine and coastal environment on behalf of the government and people of Trinidad and Tobago! Additionally – research staff trained internally to write research proposals 3-capacity development in the public awareness programmes included some IOC ocean literacy information for the k-12 students – information officers more informed of the upcoming decade and all lesson plans have been upgraded to include more ocean-based information 4-Radio broadcasts are all focused on ocean-related themes, etc. Although the aforementioned has not fully addressed the challenges we face of capacity development at the national level (academia, policy makers, etc.) the IMA has been able to raise awareness with internal staff and key stakeholders who have sought and continue to seek assistance of funding and training. For example, our title Sponsor, Republic Bank Limited, has included the IMA’s Decade of Oceans Project in their sponsorship programme, etc. It is slow but i have tried my best.
